It takes an average of 8 h 20 min to complete, which is considered a moderately challenging route. The trailhead is located on the west side of Banks State Park. From the parking area, take a right onto a dirt road and follow it for about 1.5 miles until you reach a gravel road.
Turn left onto this road, which will lead you to a parking lot. Follow the road for a short distance and you will see a sign for the Banks Trailhead. From I-5 in Portland, drive north on Interstate 84 for approximately 2 miles.
At the end of the highway, turn left (south) onto the Oregon Turnpike (I-84) and drive approximately 3.3 miles to the intersection with the banks trail. Take the first right (north) at the fork in the trail and continue for another 1/2 mile. You will come to another fork.
Continue on this trail for 2.2 miles, passing through a few small creeks, before reaching a large clearing.

How long is the Vernonia bike trail?
Vernonia is connected via an extension trail to the Banks-Vernonia State Trail, one of the region’s premier cycling paths. The state’s first completed “rails-to-trails” project is a 21-mile paved path that was once used to haul lumber from the timber industry to mills.
The project is part of a larger effort by the City of Vernonia to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors in the area. The project includes the construction of new sidewalks, bike lanes, and bike parking, as well as the installation of lighting and landscaping.

Electric-assisted bicycles can also be used on paved paths, but only if they have a minimum width of four feet and a maximum height of six feet, according to the state Parks and Recreation Department.
