A new public realm is being created by the Atlanta BeltLine using a 33 mile network of multi-use trails. The project, which began in 2009, is the first of its kind in the U.S. and the largest public-private partnership in Atlanta‘s history. The $1.5 billion project will connect more than 1,000 miles of trails to create a network that stretches from downtown Atlanta to the Georgia Aquarium and beyond.

What city has the BeltLine?
It started as a Master’s thesis by Ryan Gravel in 1999 and has become Atlanta‘s most famous feature, transforming abandoned rail lines into 33 miles of walking and biking paths. The Atlanta BeltLine is scheduled to be completed in the year 2030.
“It’s a great way to get people out of their cars and into their bikes,” said Atlanta City Councilman Kwanza Hall, whose district includes the project.
Why is it called the BeltLine Atlanta?
The West Point and Atlanta Railroad stopped in East Point in 1870. The result is now referred to as the Atlanta Beltline. In the early 20th century, Atlanta became a major center for the automobile industry. In the 1920s and 1930s, it was home to a number of automobile manufacturers, including General Motors, Ford Motor Company, and Chrysler Corporation.
By the 1950s it had become the center of Atlanta‘s automobile manufacturing industry, as well as one of its largest employers.
The city was also the site of several major automobile assembly plants, such as GM’s Atlanta Assembly Plant, which produced the Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Plymouth and Plymouth Valiant, among others; and Ford’s assembly plant in Decatur, Georgia, where the Ford Model T was built.
These plants were among the largest in the world at the time, employing more than 100,000 workers. Today, these plants are still in operation, producing vehicles for both domestic and foreign markets.
Can you walk the entire BeltLine in Atlanta?
My friend T and I walked the entire Atlanta BeltLine on Saturday. The whole thing is correct. The Atlanta BeltLine will have a continuous loop of over 1,000 miles of walking and biking. It’s a great way to get to and from work, school, and anywhere else you want to go in the city.
We started our walk at the Georgia Aquarium, where we met up with a few other friends. We then walked to the Museum of History and Industry (Museum of I.H.I.E.L.D.), which is the home of the Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Ant-Man, Wasp, War Machine, Spider-Woman, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Misty Knight, Punisher, Elektra and more.
After that, we took a short detour to see a little bit of downtown Atlanta, which was pretty cool. Then we walked back to our car and headed home. I’m not sure how much longer we’ll be able to do this, but it was a lot of fun and we’re looking forward to doing it again next year.

Is the Atlanta BeltLine safe?
