The trail begins in the north at Tate Road in Travelers Rest and goes to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The trail then heads south through the woods, passing a number of historic buildings, including the former home of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The trail ends at the intersection of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail.

There is no shortage of parking in the numerous parks along the route, including Gateway National Recreation Area, which is easy to reach from Highway 276. The trailhead is located at the end of the parking lot on the right. Gateway N.R.A. Parking Lot, Gateway, NC Directions: From the North Carolina Turnpike, take the exit for I-40 and follow the signs to Gateway. Turn right onto Gateway Blvd. and go about 1.5 miles.
At the first intersection, turn left and take a left onto a dirt road. Follow this road for about a mile and you will come to a fork. Take the left fork and continue for another 1/2 mile until you reach a parking area on your left. From here, you can either continue straight on to the trail, or turn around and head back the way you came.
Are there bathrooms on the Swamp Rabbit Trail?
There are plenty of restrooms along the way, but most of them are located on or within a three-minute walk of the trail. If you’re looking for a place to take a break from the hike, you can stop at one of our many picnic tables. There are also a few tables set up in the parking lot for those who want to sit and enjoy the view.
