Mediterranean diet — rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, olive oil, nuts and whole grains — has long been hailed as a heart-healthy eating plan. According to new research, its health benefits may be limited to the rich and famous.

A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that people who ate Mediterranean-style diets were more likely to have high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes than those who followed a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet. The study was led by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, and was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF).

The findings are based on data from the Nurses’ Health Study II, a long-term study of more than 40,000 women and men who were followed for an average of 10.5 years. Participants were asked about their diet and lifestyle habits, including whether they ate at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day and how often they exercised.

They were also asked to fill out questionnaires on their health and other lifestyle factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and use of prescription and over-the-counter medications. In addition, the researchers collected blood and urine samples.
