The tent caterpillar turns into a moths. The Eastern and Western Tent caterpillar moths are brown in color and have white stripes on their wings. There is a dark brown or black color on the back of the head and a white stripe on the wings of the forest tent caterpillar.
A forest tent moth is most likely to be found in areas where there is a lot of leaf litter in the soil. If you see a large number of these insects in your yard, it’s a good indication that you may have an infestation of a tent moth.

What kind of moth does a tent caterpillar turn into?
The eastern tent caterpillar is a member of the family Lasiocampidae, the tent caterpillar or lappet moths. One generation per year is what it is. Should I kill tent caterpillars?
Killing tent caterpillar is sometimes necessary to get rid of them. Dropping the nest into soapy water can be used to take care of small infestations, but contact insecticides work best for larger populations.
The most widely used insect in the U.S. is bt, but it can also be used on other plants. The best way to tell the difference is to look at the underside of the leaves. If you can’t see a difference, it’s probably an insect.
What do tent caterpillars change into?

Do tent caterpillars turn to butterflies?
Eastern tent caterpillar fly in search of mates in late summer and early fall, like all butterflies and moths. Mature – The caterpillar emerges from the pupa and begins to feed on the leaves of the host plant. The adult moth is about the size of a grain of rice and has a wingspan of about 1.5 inches. It is a dark brown color with a black head and thorax and a yellowish-brown abdomen.
Its wings are long and slender, and it has two pairs of wings on each side of its body. Adult females are larger than males, with wingspans of up to 2.2 inches, while males are smaller than females, at about 0.8 inches in length. Both sexes are wingless, but males have a pair of antennae on their forewings and females have only one pair.
Mature females lay their eggs in the leaf litter of their host plants and the eggs hatch in about two weeks. After hatching, the larvae pupate in a cocoon in which they remain until they are ready to fly. Adults emerge from their cocoons in mid-summer and begin their search for mates and food.
Do tent caterpillars come back every year?
Each tent caterpillar species has one generation per year. Adults only live for a few days, during which they mate and lay their eggs. Tent caterpillars feed on a wide variety of plants, including grasses, shrubs, and trees.
They also eat insects and other invertebrates, such as moths, flies, beetles, wasps, ants, spiders, centipedes, grasshoppers, crickets, snails, slugs, lizards, frogs, toads, mice, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects, mollusks, crustaceans, seeds, fruits, nuts, berries, flowers, vegetables, grains, legumes, roots, tubers, fungi, lichens, bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, cyanobacteria, yeasts, viruses, parasites, etc.
What are tent caterpillars good for?
Tent caterpillars are not harmful to plants in most years and can even be beneficial to the environment by providing a food source for wildlife. Tent caterpillar only defoliates a few branches and leaves of the plant.
Can you burn tent caterpillars?
A lot of people use a small propane torch to destroy tent caterpillar nests. I’ve seen it done many times and this is the way I learned to do it.
If you don’t have access to a torch, you can also use a blowtorch, but be careful not to get too close to the nest.
If you do get close, it’s best to leave the torch on for a few minutes to allow the caterpillars to dry out a bit before you move on.
