The penn 309 was the standard for bay trolling. Most guys use 30lb mono in the summer and 30lb Monel in the fall. It’s a good reel for spring, I would stick with lighter lures up to 50 lbs. I’m not a big fan of monel, but I do like the Penn 310.
I’ve had it for a couple of years now, and it’s still going strong. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it doesn’t come with a lanyard, so you have to buy a new one every time you want to use it. If you’re going to go mono, you might as well go all the way.

What do the numbers on Penn Reels mean?
