Why is it awkward to eat alone?
According to a study conducted by uk researchers, we are distracted from our food when we are around others. We end up eating 18% more than we would if we were alone because we are interacting with friends. The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, found that people were more likely to eat when they were around other people, even if they didn’t know them.
The researchers, from the University of East Anglia, asked participants to complete a questionnaire about their eating habits. They then asked them to take part in an experiment in which they had to choose between two food items. One was a chocolate bar and the other was an apple. Half of the participants were told that they would be eating the apple, while the others were given a choice between the two.
After the experiment, the researchers measured the amount of time that participants spent looking at the food, as well as the number of times they looked at it. Those who were asked to look at both items were found to spend more time looking than those who had been given the choice of only one item.

The two studies are the largest and most comprehensive of their kind in terms of sample size and duration of follow-up, and they are also the only ones to include data on eating habits and eating patterns of both adolescents and adults, as well as a measure of social and emotional well-being.
