To maintain normal body stores and a normal concentration in interstitial fluid, an intake of about 40 meq/day is needed. Depending on the age and sex of the individual, it would appear that the minimum requirement is between 1,600 and 2,000 vitamins B-12 per day.
B12 deficiency can be caused by a variety of factors, including a lack of absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, a deficiency in the liver, or a combination of these factors.
