To properly maintain a tent, it should never be washed in a top loading washing machine. If you absolutely must, you can wash it in a large, industrial size front loading washer on a gentle cycle, hang dry it, and retreat it with weatherproofing and UV proofing sprays — but that’s a lot of work.
If you do decide to wash your tent in the wash machine, be sure to use a high quality detergent and rinse it thoroughly before putting it back into the dryer. This will help to remove any dirt and grime that may have built up on the inside of the tent during the washing process.

Can you wash a tent in a washing machine without agitator?
Never machine-wash or machine-dry a tent. A washer can tear fabric, mesh and seams. Dryers can do the same, and can generate enough heat to do serious damage to fabrics. Tents should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
They should not be left out in the sun for extended periods of time, or exposed to temperatures above 100°F (38°C) for more than a few hours at a time.
If you must store your tent outdoors, make sure it is well-ventilated and that it has adequate ventilation to prevent condensation from forming on the inside of the tent, which can lead to mold and mildew growth.
Can I wash a nylon tent in the washing machine?
Never, never put a nylon tent in the washing machine! The coating on the floor and fly of nylon tents will be destroyed by flexing and abrasion. If the tent is not large, you could wash it by hand in the tub. Don’t use a lot of detergent because it will damage the nylon fabric. If you are going to use the wash machine, make sure that the machine is running at a low speed.
If it’s running too fast, the fabric will be stretched too much, and you will not be able to get the water out of the fly and floor of your tent. Also, be careful not to over-determine the amount of water that needs to be removed. Too much water will make it impossible to remove all the dirt and grime from the ground.
How do you dry a wet tent?
The first thing you can do is towel dry the tent, leaving the rest to dry on its own. The tent will be able to dry faster if that part of your home is exposed to sunlight. Adding a box fan in front of it will allow it to run for a few hours if it is not.
If you are using a tent that has a built-in rain fly, you may want to consider adding a rain cover to it. This will help to keep the rain out and keep your tent dry. You can also use a plastic sheet to cover the inside of the fly to help keep it dry as well.
Can you pressure wash a tent?
Most of the time, you can clean a tent with a bucket, sponge, hose, and some mild soap without using strong detergents. Unless you have mold in your tent, don’t use bleach or any other harsh chemicals.
Don’t use a pressure washer because you’ll end up putting a lot of pressure on the inside of the tent, which can cause it to leak.
How long should you air out a tent?
Take the forest debris out of the tent and let it sit for a few days. If the odor doesn’t blow away in the first few days, you’ll need to air it out for a few more days to get rid of it. The answer to this question depends on the type of tent you are using.
If you’re using a single-wall tent, it should be air-dried for at least 3-4 weeks. However, if you have a double-walled tent or a multi-pitch tent that has multiple walls, then you may want to wait a bit longer. The reason for this is that the longer you let your tent dry out the more likely it is to develop mold and mildew.
This is especially true of tents that have multiple layers of fabric, such as a quilt or quiver. Once the mold has set in, there is a good chance that it will spread throughout the entire tent.
How do you clean a Mouldy tent?
If you want to kill the mold, spray the affected area with distilled white vinegar. To scrub the area lightly, mix 1 cup of lemon juice and 1 cup of salt with a gallon of hot water and use a soft brush. It is difficult to work with detergent soaps and bleach, which are harsh on canvas.
Can you use Nikwax Tech Wash on a tent?
There is a tent specific wash. We recommend Nikwax Tech Wash, it’s super eco-friendly and won’t degrade any coatings on your tent. If you’re going to be camping in the rain, you’ll want to make sure you have a waterproofing system in place.
The best option is a rainfly, but if you don’t have one you can always use a tent liner. You can also use an extra layer of clothing, like a fleece jacket, to protect your body from the elements.
