Tree straps should be as long as your hammock plus your height. It would not depend on the size of the trees or the distance between them, you lose options to hang to long extra weight to pack and extra cost. If you use a whoopie sling, rings, a CL, cinch buckle, etc., other factors would be present.
If you are going to use a strap, make sure it is strong enough to hold the weight of the tree. If you have a tree that is very heavy, you may want to go with a shorter strap. You can also go for a longer strap if you don’t need to carry it all the time, but you will have to pay more for it.
