To measure with a tape measure you need to remove a section from your pole, lay a tape measure or ruler on a table and put the section, end down, on to the tape measure. You have to read the diameter. It is nearly impossible to measure the diameter by holding the tape up to the pole.
If you can’t measure by hand, you’ll have to use a digital caliper. You can buy these online or at a hardware store like Home Depot or Lowe’s. If you don’t already have one, get one. It’s a good idea to have a friend or family member help you with the measurements.

What material are tent poles made of?
