Hardwoods such as ash, walnut, cherry, maple provide stiffness and strength and durability, while softwoods such as cedar, fir, pine, basswood offer lightweight and flex. There isn’t a prescribed formula for building a laminated paddle. Local materials and techniques will often be used to achieve the look and feel of the project.

Is it hard to make a canoe paddle?
Making a paddle out of a single piece of wood isn’t easy, but it’s doable. The trick is to get rid of everything on a piece of red cedar that isn’t a paddle. You don’t have to use power tools to do it. I used a pair of pliers and a hammer to get it all off.
If you don’t have a plier, you can use a flat head screwdriver to pry the pieces apart. You can also use your hands to help you get them out. Be careful not to cut yourself on the way out, or you’ll end up with a nasty cut on your hand.
Once you’ve removed everything, it should look something like this: You’ll notice that there are a few pieces that are still attached to each other. These pieces are called “paddles” and they are what you’re going to be using to make the paddles. They are made from 2×6 boards that have been cut in half and glued together.
This is a very simple process, and it only takes a couple of minutes.
How thick should a canoe paddle be?
This is the number 1. The tip and edges of the paddle’s blade should be 1/4″ thick or slightly less. The thickness should be marked on the edge of the blade. The edges need to be smoothed out with a jack or smoothing plane. Cut a 1-1/2″-diameter hole in the bottom of each paddle.

seal any exposed wood with varnish on a regular basis. Let the area dry with a 10% coat of finish. Apply a full strength coat of varnish after lightly sanding the area. Remove all the finish from the paddle using a sanding block and sand the entire surface with 220-grit sandpaper. Allow to dry completely before applying a second coat.
