How long does it take to make a quinzee?
A quinzee is easy to build, but takes a few hours to put together. If you’ll be working into the night, make sure you have enough time to build one or bring a flashlight. A quinzee can be slept in for up to a week in consistently cold temperatures.
Quinzees are a great way to spend a night in the woods, but they’re not the only option. If you’re looking for something a little more permanent, you can build your own.
How do you make snow bricks?
Fill a rectangular shaped plastic container (like Tupperware etc) with snow. Make sure you pack it in really well. You’ve made a perimeter, now stack your bricks around it. If your bricks are crumbling and your snow is too soft, add some water to make it a bit more firm. You can use any kind of snow you like, but I like to use a mixture of white and brown snow to make it look more realistic.
I used a mix of brown and white snow for this project, and it turned out great! You could also use regular snow if you don’t like the look of it. Just make sure it’s not too fluffy or it will be difficult to stack the bricks. Once you have your base made, you can start stacking them on top of each other.
It’s important that you stack them in such a way that they are not touching, otherwise you’ll end up with a pile of bricks that are too big to fit in the container you’re using. To make this easier, I put a piece of cardboard between each brick, so that I could stack it without having to worry about it touching the next one.

A pile of at least 6 feet high and 10 feet in diameter is needed. I suggest using shovels to pile the snow on, and sleds or tarps to carry the snow from the surrounding area to the pile. A quinzee takes a lot of snow, and the snow in the area around the pile will be very heavy.
If you are going to do this, make sure you have the right equipment for the job. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you may end up with a pile that looks like this: This is not a good situation. The snow is too heavy to move. You’ll have to shovel it all out, which will take a long time.
Also, if you try to haul it out with your sled, the sled will get stuck and you won’t be able to get out of it. So, it’s better to use a tarptent or a snowshoe to help you move it, or to have a friend or family member do it for you.
