You might be able to grill on a screened-in porch with a propane grill, but you probably don’t want to. There may be local rules and regulations that prevent a grill from being used inside a screened-in porch. You still have the risk of smoke inhalation.
If you’re going to grill outdoors, it’s best to use a gas grill. Gas grills are the most common type of grill in the U.S., but they’re not the only option. You can also use an electric grill or a wood-burning grill if you have access to one.

Where should grill be placed in backyard?
Establish your grill at least 10 feet away from buildings and other structures as well as dry vegetation that could catch fire. It’s not a good idea to cart the grill under cover to cook in the rain, as it may be tempting.
If you’re cooking outdoors, make sure you have a fire extinguisher nearby. If you don’t have one, you may want to consider buying one. Fire extinguishers are available at most hardware stores, and you can also purchase them online.
Can you put a roof over a grill?
The outdoor cooking areas don’t have to be fancy to be useful. A basic grill can be covered with a roof to provide protection from the elements. Wood, plastic, metal, and even plastic sheeting are some of the materials that can be used to make a grill roof. If you’re looking for something a little more substantial, you can also make your own roof.
You’ll need a piece of 2×4 or 3×6 lumber, a few pieces of 1/4-inch plywood and a couple of screws. If you have access to a drill press, use it to drill a hole in the bottom of the lumber and then use a hammer to hammer it into place. Once the roof is in place, it’s ready to go.
Can a BBQ sit on wood?
Make sure you have one that is heavy enough to not blow around your grill and also wide enough to extend a couple of inches around your grill. The grill mat will make grilling on your patio perfectly safe, and it will also protect your wood from the elements.
If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on one of these, you can also make your own. You can use a piece of plywood, or even a sheet of cardboard, to make one. Just make sure that it is thick enough so that you won’t be able to see through it when you are cooking.
Can you convert a free standing grill to a built in?
I have done this for my clients. If your built-in grill has folding sides that act as a work surface, you’ll want to remove them. There are big gaps in the bottom of the grill when they are left on. If you don’t have a grill that folds down to the ground, then you’re going to need to find a way to get the sides of your grill to fold down.
There are a number of ways to do this, but I’ve found that the easiest way is to use a piece of wood that’s about the same size and shape as your grilling grate. This will allow you to cut the wood into the desired shape and then drill a hole in it. Once you’ve drilled the hole, simply screw it into place with a couple of screws.
