The trail starts in georgetown at the western end of water street. The first three miles offer a wonderful view of the C&O Canal. The trail continues along the river for a few miles before turning left and heading up the hillside. At the top of the climb, you’ll see a sign that reads, “The Washington Monument.”
This is a great place to stop and take in the view. You’ll also notice that there are a number of benches along this stretch of trail. These are great places to sit and enjoy the views. If you want to take a break, stop at one of these benches to enjoy a cup of coffee or a hot chocolate.
There are also picnic tables and a fire pit at this point. The next mile or so will take you through a forested area with some great views of Washington, D.C. and Mount Vernon. At the bottom of this hill, the trail turns right and heads back to the parking lot.
