The study, published today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the first to look at the biomechanics of human and great ape walking. The researchers, led by researchers from the University of California, San Diego, used high-speed video cameras to track the movements of more than 1,000 people as they walked on a treadmill.
They found that humans walk more slowly than dogs and cats, but that the difference is not as large as previously thought. In fact, walking on two feet is more efficient than walking with one foot in front and one in back, the researchers found.
