Reticulated pythons are one of few snakes that grow big enough to be able to swallow a human. They can suck blood out of the victim’s body because of their jaw, which is made of bones that are found in our inner ear. In the video below, you can see a python in action. It’s not the first time we’ve seen this kind of snake, but it’s certainly the most impressive.

Can you survive if a snake eats you?
Eating something while it’s still alive is dangerous for them, so they will wrap around you and crush you so hard that your blood will stop pumping and it won’t get to your brain, and you’ll pass out and die very, very quickly. They will know that you’re dead because they can monitor your vital signs. And then they’ll take you to the morgue.
They’ll put you on a gurney and take your organs out of your body and put them in a vat of liquid nitrogen and freeze them so that they don’t decompose. You’ll be dead for a long, long time before you wake up. So they’re going to keep you alive as long as they possibly can, and then when they get bored of you, they want to kill you. That’s what they do, that’s how they make their living.
Has a snake ever eaten a human whole?
Indonesian woman has been killed and swallowed whole by a 7m (23ft) long python, local authorities. This was the second python death reported in Indonesia in just over a week. The woman, who was reportedly in her 20s, was found dead in a river in West Java on Sunday.
Her body was so badly decomposed that it was impossible to determine the cause of death, according to the Jakarta Globe, which reported that the woman had been bitten by the snake. The woman’s family had reported her missing after she failed to return home from a shopping trip, the newspaper said.
Can a python swallow a human?
A full-grown reticulated python can open its jaws wide enough to swallow a human but the width of the shoulders of some adults can pose a problem.
“The shoulders are the most important part of a person’s body, so if they’re too wide, it’s going to be very difficult for them to get through the jaws,” said study co-author and University of California, Davis, paleoanthropologist John Hawks.
“If you have a wide shoulders, you can’t get your arms through, and if you don’t have arms, then you won’t be able to hold onto the prey. It’s a very complex system.” Homo habilis (left) and Homo neanderthalensis (right). Davis.
A new study published in the journal PLOS ONE finds that the shoulder girdle of modern-day humans is much wider than previously thought. The findings suggest that modern humans may have evolved from a group of early hominids known as Australopithecus afarensis, which lived about 2.5 million years ago.

Can your pet snake eat you?
Pythons don’t attack people because of the shoulder impediment as well as the large size of some humans. If the person is small and the python is large, it’s possible that the python could first kill the person and then eat them.
“If you’re a small person, you might be able to get out of the way, but if it’s a big python, it might just eat you,” said Dr. Michael D. Smith, an associate professor of zoology at the University of California, Davis, who has studied python attacks on humans.
Can a snake eat itself?
Some snakes can, on rare occasions, end up eating themselves. Scientists snakes that eat other snakes may mistake their own tails as those of a prey, and once they begin swallowing their tails, they have no way of knowing that they are actually eating a snake.
“It’s a very rare occurrence, but it does happen,” said Dr. Michael J. Smith, a professor of entomology at the University of California, Davis, who was not involved in the study.
