The change was made in response to the growing number of priests who were using alcohol as a form of self-medication for a variety of mental and physical ailments, such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

In addition, many of these priests were also suffering from alcohol abuse and addiction.

Church does not prohibit priests from marrying outside of the Church, but it does prohibit them from engaging in any form of sexual activity with a married person.
