Contrary to popular belief, mice are more attracted to the scent of chocolate than the more traditional mouse-bait cheese or other aromas.
“Mice love chocolate, but they don’t like it as much as they do the smell of the cheese,” said Dr. Michael J. O’Connor, an associate professor of veterinary medicine at the University of California, Davis, and the lead author of a study published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science.

Can chocolate kill rodents?
Half of a chocolate chip or a few shavings from a chocolate candy bar won’t kill your mousy, although it won’t do anything to contribute to his nutrition, either. Sometimes a bit of chocolate will be a sweet treat for him, such as on his birthday or two or three times a month.

What is a mouse favorite food?
Of all the foods included on the mouse menu, chocolate is hands-down the favorite, followed closely by peanut butter. The researchers also found that mice were more likely to eat chocolate when they were given a choice between chocolate and a non-chocolate food. The researchers speculate that the mice may be responding to the chocolate because it is more palatable to them than the other foods, which may explain why mice prefer chocolate over other types of foods.
