“Human exercise performance is better in the evening compared to the morning, as [athletes] consume less oxygen, that is, they use less energy, for the same intensity of exercise in the evening versus the morning,” said Gad Asher, a researcher in the Department of Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Asher and his colleagues have been studying the effects of sleep on athletic performance for more than a decade.
They have found that athletes who sleep less than eight hours a night are at a greater risk of injury and performance decline than those who get eight or more hours of shut-eye each night. In fact, sleep deprivation has been shown to impair performance by as much as 30 percent, according to a study published last year in The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.
Sleep deprivation is also associated with lower levels of testosterone and cortisol, two hormones that play a key role in muscle growth and repair, and are also linked to increased risk for heart disease, diabetes and certain types of cancer. As a result, it’s not surprising that sleep-deprived athletes tend to perform worse than their counterparts who are able to get a good night’s sleep.
