What is forbidden to eat in Christianity?
The only dietary restrictions specified for Christians in the New Testament are to “abstain from food sacrificed to idols, from blood, from meat of strangled animals” (Acts 15:29), teachings that the early Church Fathers, such as Clement of Alexandria and Origen, interpreted to mean that Christians were not to eat pork, fish, or shellfish, and that they were to refrain from eating the flesh of animals that had not been slaughtered in accordance with Jewish dietary laws.
In the fourth century, however, the Council of Nicaea (325) decreed that all Christians should be allowed to consume meat from animals slaughtered according to Jewish law. In the fifth and sixth centuries, Pope St. Gregory the Great (590-604) forbade the eating of pork and other animal products, but permitted the consumption of fish and poultry.
IX (1054-1085) also forbad Christians from consuming animal flesh, although he did allow the use of animal bones for medicinal purposes. However, this leniency did not extend to the practice of eating pork.
